In the early 1920s, a piece of advice was given to Carl Grant by his father. That advice is what laid the foundation to what is now one of the most successful residential and commercial construction companies today.
“My father insisted that I save every penny I made,” Carl said. “He told me it would allow me the opportunity to do something big someday. He was a great role model and I followed his instruction.”
Carl then began saving. With two dollars he opened a children's savings account at his local bank in Duck Hill, Mississippi.
After serving our country in World War II, Carl came home to having to make a very monumental decision about the future.
“My father-in-law was a general contractor and told me I would find enjoyment in building homes because I could look back even years later at each home and know that I had a hand in making it what it was,” Carl said.
The advice given to Carl by his father began to come to fruition in 1947 when he decided to establish his own construction business.
“I had $5,000 that I had saved since I was a kid,” Carl said. “Times were different then and the value of money was much better, and I knew I could do a lot with my $5,000.”
Carl used some of his savings to purchase one-acre lots in Frayser for $500 each and the remainder for building materials and expenses. He built four homes and sold them for $7,000 a piece.
Twelve years later, Carl became the president of the Memphis Area Home Builders Association in 1959. In 1980, he served as the president of Memphis Area Association of Realtors. In addition, he was instrumental in organizing the Home Builder Association of Tennessee and was elected as the first president.
In 1970, Carl's two sons, Richard and Milton, spawned the second generation of Grant homebuilders founding Richard & Milton Grant, LLC. By growing up within the industry, the two brothers, learned the trade first hand by first working as framing carpenters beginning at the young age of sixteen.
Richard and Milton used the knowledge and advice from their father to make their own way in the building business by saving their own money and building their company from the ground up.
In 1979, Richard served as the second generation of Grants to hold the position as president of the Memphis Area Home Builders Association. He presently manages homebuilding and real estate operations for his company.
Simultaneously, Milton served as president of the Memphis Apartment Council in 1979. He presently owns, operates and manages the 1,300 apartment units he built. Both brothers, together, built, own and manage Self Sentry Storage located at 1961 Covington Pike.
The legacy continued as Richard's two sons, Keith and David began to learn the construction trade as teenagers, just as their father and grandfather had before them. In 1996, Keith and David were the third generation of Grant builders to establish their own homebuilding company, Keith and David Grant Homes. They too learned the trade skills by framing houses, laying sod and cleaning up after the subcontractors.
In 2004, Keith and David received the esteemed honor of "Builder of the Year" from the Memphis Area Home Builders Association. Two years later, Keith made history by serving as president in 2007 of the Memphis Area Home Builders Association, making him the first time third generation of Grant builders to hold the post in Memphis.
In 2005, Kim Grant Brown, Richard’s only daughter, made her mark in the homebuilding business when she established Kim Grant Homes. One of only a few women in the industry in the Mid-South, Kim has always been interested in home building business. She now enjoys building beautiful quality homes, while continually working to maintain the Grant tradition of excellent customer service.
Owners of all the Grant homebuilders are licensed real estate agents in Tennessee and Mississippi and members of the Memphis Area Home Builders Association of Realtors. Keith and David are also members of the North Mississippi Home Builders Association.
“We enjoy being able to make homebuyers’ dreams come true by providing them with a quality-built home complete with the latest in architectural design and amenities,” Keith said. “The biggest purchase anyone makes is a home, and it is enjoyable to be part of that.”
